O’Neill showcases the scientific work of AFBI in Brussels

Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill has launched an event in Brussels to showcase the scientific work of the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) to a range of MEPs and EU Commission officials.
Wednesday, 4 September 2013

AFBI carries out a wide range of Research & Development (R&D) in a broad range of areas relevant to agri-food competitiveness, food safety and environmental sustainability. This work is funded by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and several other organisations, including the European Union.

Minister O’Neill said: “I am delighted to launch this event to profile the scientific work of AFBI to Commission officials. The competitive EU research funding which AFBI has already won, has made a very positive impact on the competitiveness of the agri-food sector in the north of Ireland and complements the scientific work that AFBI carries out for my Department. It also helps to build scientific capacity within AFBI to enable it to respond effectively to emergencies that threaten the agri-food sector.

“It is important that the north increases its drawdown of European R&D funding in line with the Executive’s Barossa Task Force targets. My Department is supporting the local agri-food industry and research providers to increase their share of EU R&D funding by supporting the appointment of a new European R&D Liaison post in AFBI.”

The Minister concluded: “I wish to thank Martina Anderson MEP for facilitating this very successful event. I am also grateful for her for organising meetings for me with DG Agri, DG Env, DG Peche and with Commissioner Maire Geoghan-Quinn during my time here in Brussels to discuss a range of topical issues.”
