Gildernew launches field to fork initiative in Omagh

Tuesday, 22 April 2008

Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA has launched the ‘Field to Fork’ educational resource for primary school children in the West.

The resource focuses on local food for schools and its links to nutrition, seasonality, provenance, environment, health and our cultural heritage. The launch took place in Omagh, and was organised by Western Investing for Health Partnership.

Speaking at the launch the Minister explained: “My department has had a close working relationship with the Investing for Health Partnership since its establishment in 2003, and I am pleased that we have been able to play such a constructive role in the development of this excellent programme. I am convinced that local food procurement is central to the entire industry’s future and am very encouraged by local initiatives like ‘Field to Fork’ where we can jointly work to achieve healthier, happier and longer lives for all our people.”

The Minister added: “If we can change mindsets at an early age, then we have a better chance of encouraging people to make wiser choices about their health and well-being. The ‘Field to Fork’ initiative provides a new tool to educate primary school children about the importance of local, sustainable, and seasonal food in our diets.”
