Gildernew jointly hosts milestone cross-border Animal Health and Welfare stakeholder event

Monday, 12 April 2010

Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA and Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Minister Brendan Smith TD today hosted a milestone all Ireland event for animal health and welfare stakeholders.

The EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, Mr John Dalli addressed stakeholders at the event.

Speaking after the event in the Slieve Russell Hotel in County Cavan, Minister Gildernew said: “It was a great honour to welcome Commissioner Dalli to the conference. To have a European Commissioner at such an event so soon after taking up his appointment is no mean feat. His attendance today reflects the close links that exist between Ireland as a whole and the European Commission. It also shows that the Commission recognises our need and desire for the alignment of animal health and welfare policies on the island”.

“Much of what we do today in modern agriculture is determined by Brussels and it is imperative that our collective voice is heard there. I am very keen to build on the work that I have already started since I took office three years ago, in forging stronger links with the EU institutions. Through working closely with our new MEP team, we can enhance that effort and reap the benefits will that flow from it.”

The event focussed on the implementation of the All Island Animal Health and Welfare Strategy, which was agreed at the end of March by North South Ministerial Council Ministers.

Focusing on delivery of the new strategy, Minister Gildernew said: “Today’s event provided an opportunity for stakeholders from across the Island to discuss the delivery of the Strategy. The ultimate aim of which is to secure the free movement of animals on the island. North-South co-operation on animal health and welfare issues has the potential to help reduce and prevent the spread of animal disease across Ireland. Other potential benefits include improving trade and improve the sustainability of Irish farming.”

In conclusion, Minister Gildernew said: “I believe that co-operation of this nature will support international recognition of the quality of our products and will be good for marketing right across our industry. I am committed to ensuring this close level of co-operation continues for everyone’s benefit.”
