Local pork and beef safe to eat say Ministers

Tuesday, 16 December 2008

The Agriculture and Health Ministers have given all Northern Ireland meat products on sale in the shops a clean bill of health and encouraged the public to enjoy them.

And the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has added its assurance that people can be confident that beef, pork and milk on sale here is as safe to eat and drink as it was before this incident.

Agriculture Minister Michelle Gildernew MP MLA said: "My department has worked closely with the FSA to support its action to ensure that public health is protected. I appreciate the full co-operation of the industry in ensuring that all product is safe. The industry has an excellent reputation which is well justified and I am sure the public will row in behind it, give it full support and enjoy a wholesome diet."

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey MLA said: "I know that the recent concerns over potentially contaminated meat affected consumer confidence. However I have taken best scientific advice and I have confidence and can reassure the public that they should have no concerns about their health as a result of this incident. The promotional breakfast at Stormont on 15 December which was enjoyed by politicians and leaders in the food industry is testament to the fact that our products are nutritious and safe. They should be back on everyone's menu right away and in time for Christmas."

Gerry McCurdy, FSANI Director, said: "I can confirm that beef, pork and milk on supermarket shelves presents no concerns for public health as a result of this incident. We will continue to work closely with DARD (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development), AFBI (Agri-Food Bio-Sciences Institute) and local EHOs (Environmental Health officers) to ensure compliance with EU (European Union) legislation."
