Ministers support launch of Regional Food Programme

Tuesday, 5 February 2008

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) and Invest NI have announced the continuation of the local Regional Food Programme (NIRFP) for 2008/09.

The NIRFP’s aim is to promote quality regional food and to help increase its consumption by provision of financial support in five key areas namely: Regional fairs/shows; Information programmes; Award ceremonies; Seminars/ workshops and Market intelligence/research. State Aid restrictions mean that only agri-food groups representative of producers and/or processors who have local membership can apply. Registered local charities that plan to run food events will also be considered.

Praising the launch, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Michelle Gildernew MP MLA, said: “I am very pleased that my Department along with Invest NI is continuing the Regional Food Programme. During the past twelve months, the programme has provided financial support to a range of successful events that showcased the wide range of quality local produce available and galvanised the industry to work together.”

Adding support, Nigel Dodds Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, added: “My Department recognises the importance of the local food manufacturing base to the economy and the need to promote food locally as well as internationally. We will continue to work with DARD on this programme.”

Within the last year, the Northern Ireland Regional Food Programme (NIRFP) has supported a wide range of initiatives which have not only promoted local quality produce, but have also led to greater collaboration across the entire local agri-food sector.

Activities have included the new Food Pavilion at the Balmoral Show, the Northern Ireland Food and Drink Awards, National Sausage Week, and a recipe book supported by a number of local producer groups.
