Attention all animal transporters
Friday, 16 November 2007Farmers are reminded that new animal transport rules, which apply in all EU member states, came into operation earlier this year. The rules apply only to all those who transport animals for economic purposes, but there are no exclusions from the general obligation to transport all animals in ways which do not cause unnecessary suffering.
Anyone transporting animals for economic purposes over a distance exceeding 65 km must be authorised by DARD. Additional conditions, including prior vehicle approval, apply to those who undertake long journeys (over 8 hours).
However, if you are a farmer and move your own animals in your own vehicle for distances of less than 65km, you do not need to be authorised by DARD.
Also, it is important to note that, from next year all drivers and attendants transporting farmed livestock, horses or poultry over 65 km will need to have a certificate of competence. More information on this, and other aspects of the rules, including application forms, can be downloaded from the Department’s website
.
Alternatively, you may telephone Animal Welfare Section on 028 9052 5453.
Notes to Editors:
- The legislation governing animals during transport is Council Regulation EU 1/2005 and the Welfare of Animals (Transport) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006 (as amended).
- The Council Regulation covers the transport of not only farm animals, but all vertebrate animals.
- All media enquiries to DARD Press Office, Tel: 028 9052 4619. Out of hours, contact the Duty Press Officer via pager number 076 9971 5440, and your call will be returned.
