Last call for sheep electronic identification consultation

Tuesday, 27 October 2009

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) wishes to remind the public that the consultation on the electronic identification (EID) of sheep will close on 6 November 2009.

Everyone with an interest in shaping the way we implement the new EU rules is encouraged to respond.

The consultation opened in September 2009 and covers the implementation of individual movement recording of sheep and goats, and electronic identification of sheep, as required by Council Regulation (EC) No 21/2004.

The Regulation requires the individual identity of sheep and goats born after 31 December 2009 to be recorded when they are moved. In order to allow this to be achieved for sheep, the Regulation requires them to be identified with an EID device and a conventional tag.

The way we implement the new rules will be decided upon after the consultation ends and will take effect at the beginning of next year.

All keepers will be issued with guidance on the new system when the rules are agreed.

The final closing date for comments on the consultation is 6 November 2009.
