Gildernew meets new local MEPs

Monday, 21 September 2009

Minister Michelle Gildernew MP MLA today met with the new local European Parliament team following their recent election on 4 June.

The Minister indicated that she was keen to foster a good working relationship between them and her department that would be to the benefit of all constituents in the north of Ireland. She hoped that this would be the first of what would become a regular event.

During the meeting with Bairbre de Brun MEP, Jim Nicholson MEP and Diane Dodds MEP, the Minister highlighted some of the key strategic issues with a European dimension that her Department is progressing, including the Rural Development Programme, Fisheries, Single Farm Payments, the Dairy Industry and Climate Change.

Afterwards the Minister said: “This was an extremely constructive meeting. Much of what we do is determined by Brussels and it is imperative that our collective voice is heard there. I am keen to build on the work I have already started in forging stronger links with the EU institutions and I hope that by working closely with our new MEP team, we can enhance that effort and the benefits that will flow.”
