Speaking during the reception at Stormont, the Minister said: “I welcome the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution and success that women and girls have made to sport in the north of Ireland over the past year.”
“Sports heroines come in many forms and roles. They are people who have contributed to women’s success in sport not just as athletes and competitors but as coaches, volunteers and managers.”
Continuing, the Minister recognised the achievements of the sporting heroines. She said: “I believe that sport has the ability to not only improve health but it also inspires, motivates and increases confidence in those that take part. I encourage more women and girls to recognise that there are many sports that they can and should be able to play and compete in.
The Minister went on to call on sports organisations to take positive action to encourage more women and girls into sport. In particular she said: “If sport wishes to be seen as truly inclusive, truly equitable and truly open to everyone it must address this problem as a matter of urgency.”
