Ulster Grand Prix "revs up" for race day
Monday, 17 August 2009Minister for Sport Nelson McCausland has attended Race Day at the Ulster Grand Prix.
Speaking at the reception on the course, the Minister said: “In addition to being one of Northern Ireland’s most prestigious motorcycle sporting events, the Ulster Grand Prix is one of the fastest road races in the world. The first Ulster Grand Prix, held way back in October 1922, had 75 entries in four classes. The event continues to draw the world’s best road racers with an overall entry list in 2009 of over 200, travelling from all over the globe.
“My Department is continuing to work closely with Dundrod and District Motorcycle Club and Lisburn City Council to support the event as it showcases the best of what Northern Ireland has to offer.”
The event raises the profile of Northern Ireland across the world through priceless media coverage that places international attention, not just on the excitement and challenges that the race presents, but also on what a great place Northern Ireland is to visit.
The Minister continued: “The Ulster Grand Prix attracts nearly 20,000 fans, many from overseas, and this number continues to grow. Once visitors have experienced race week they often return to Northern Ireland time and time again.”
In conclusion, the Minister acknowledged the dedication and enthusiasm of members of the Dundrod and District Motor Club who make race week possible.
