Sports Minister congratulates Belfast Olympian
Friday, 22 August 2008Sports Minister Gregory Campbell pays tribute to Belfast boxer Paddy Barnes who won a bronze medal today in the Beijing Olympics.
Minister Campbell said: “We are extremely proud of all our Northern Ireland competitors who have taken part in the Beijing Olympics.
“We congratulate Belfast boxer, Paddy Barnes on winning a bronze medal in the light-fly-weight division. Wendy Houvenaghel’s silver and now Paddy’s bronze are fantastic achievements for sport in Northern Ireland.
“Paddy’s medal is the first boxing medal for Northern Ireland in 16 years. He is an inspiration for all those wanting to follow in his young footsteps. Paddy’s medal is a result of a rigorous training regime at the Holy Family Club, who have also been successful in past Olympics.”
The Minister added: “When the Sport and Physical Recreation Strategy is launched later this Autumn I look forward to seeing more people taking part in sporting activities, putting sport in Northern Ireland on the world stage. Hopefully Wendy and Paddy’s achievements will spur on many more to follow in their foot steps, get into sport and possibly compete in London 2012.”
