Friday, 19 December 2008

Northern Ireland is issuing a last call for children born on 20 December 2004 to register on the Children’s Promise scheme.

Encouraging as many families to register their child the Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister, Gregory Campbell said: “Each child registered will play a key role in welcoming the world at the 2012 Games. They could take part in the Opening or Closing Ceremonies, Team Welcome Ceremonies, or in the programme of events that will light up the UK and Northern Ireland.

“On the eve of the child’s fourth birthday, we are making a final call to parents to register their child. If they haven’t already done so, they have until 1 April 2009 to be part of the Games by registering at Children's Promise scheme.link to external website

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) are encouraging as many children born on this date to register for the Children’s Promise scheme.

The scheme was launched during the bid to host the 2012 Games in 2004 on the 20th day of the 12th month (20/12 day) and will see those children registered taking part in events and ceremonies surrounding the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.

Over 700 children, who will be aged seven in the summer of 2012, have been registered on the scheme to date. Of these 700 there are 41 of these children registered in Northern Ireland.

To mark their fourth birthday, the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure hosted a fourth birthday party at the Grove Health and Wellbeing Centre, Belfast to celebrate the day.

All children registered were sent a birthday card and special adidas London 2012 Children’s Promise t-shirt from the London 2012 team. Their parents were invited to upload a photo of their child playing sport in the t-shirt and special Children’s Promise photo maps have been created at www.london2012.com/childrenspromise

The Children’s Promise scheme is one of the many opportunities for people across the UK to be part of the London 2012 Games.
