Extension of appointment of members to Board of Directors of Northern Ireland Museums Council
Tuesday, 10 March 2009Gregory Campbell, Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure has announced the extension of the term of appointment of two current members of the Board of Directors of Northern Ireland Museums Council.
The term of appointment for the following members has been extended, with effect from 1 April 2009 for a term of two years and nine months to 31 December 2011:
Mr Ian Hill
Mr Lexie Scott
In thanking the two members for agreeing to continue to serve on the Board of Directors the Minister said: "I welcome the extension of the term of appointment of the two members to the Board of Directors of Northern Ireland Museums Council under the terms of the Commissioner for Public Appointments Office in Northern Ireland.
"They are highly respected, valued and experienced members of the Board of Directors and I have no doubt that they will continue to make a valuable contribution to the work of Northern Ireland Museums Council."
Notes to Editors:
1. Northern Ireland Museums Council (NIMC) was established in 1993 to support the local museums of Northern Ireland in maintaining and improving their standards of collections care and public service.
2. NIMC is registered in Northern Ireland as a limited company with charitable status. It is a company limited by guarantee and not having share capital. It has a Memorandum and Article of Association.
3. The number of Directors shall not be less than seven or more than fifteen, unless and until the Members shall be Special Resolution otherwise determine.
4. The Board of Directors of NIMC comprises:
· Three Public Appointees by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure;
· Three nominees by the Eligible Authorities:
· The Curators Group shall have the right to nominate three persons in the employment of Museums Members of the Company.
· One member of National Museums and Galleries of Northern Ireland
· One nominee from the Universities;
· The independent and / or services museums in Northern Ireland recognised by NIMC shall together have the right to nominate two persons in the employment of an independent or services museum which is a Museums Member of NIMC.
5. The appointments are made in accordance with the Code of Practice of the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Public Appointments. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for the political activity of appointees (if any declared) to be published. Members attract no remuneration and receive expenses only.
6. Biographical details of the new members
Mr Ian Hill
Born in Enniskillen, Mr Hill lives in Strangford, Co Down. His term of appointment as a Member of Board of Directors of Northern Ireland Museums Council has been extended from 1 April 2009 for a term of two year and nine months to 31 December 2011. He has served on the Board of Directors of Northern Ireland Museums Council since 2002.
He is also a current member of a number of other Boards including those of the Historical Buildings Council, the Historic Monuments Council, the Ulster Orchestra, the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, Opera Fringe Downpatrick and Dumbworld Opera Wexford. A Queen's graduate, he is a former Director of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.
An award winning travel journalist Mr Hill also writes and broadcasts on the arts and culture for media at home and abroad and is the Ireland correspondent for the Museums Journal.
Mr Hill has declared that he has not participated in any political activity during the past five years.
Mr Lexie Scott
Mr Scott lives in Ballymena. His term of appointment as a Member of Board of Directors of Northern Ireland Museums Council has been extended from 1 April 2009 for a term of two year and nine months to 31 December 2011.
He has served on the Board of Directors of Northern Ireland Museums Council since 2002 and has held the position of Chairman of the Board since December 2006.
He is Head Teacher of Gracehill Primary School. He is a member of the Museums Association. He is a former elected member of Ballymena Borough Council and a former Chairman of its Cultural Services Committee and a former member of its Museums Sub-Committee.
Mr Scott has declared that he has participated in political activity during the past five years.
