Wednesday, 14 November 2007

Minister, Edwin Poots, MLA, has congratulated the team behind the Connswater Community Greenway project which has been awarded £23.5million from the Big Lottery Fund.

The Minister, who has responsibility for recreation and leisure activities, said: “The Living Landmarks programme was a very competitive UK-wide initiative. Northern Ireland has done well to secure such a significant grant from the Big Lottery fund.

“This iconic project will transform the waterways and green spaces in East Belfast. Its objectives dovetail with my Department’s aims to develop the recreational potential of waterways as part of an overarching commitment to cultural capital, including the promotion of social inclusiveness and enhancing quality of life.

“The Connswater Community Greenway project will create a linear park providing health, recreational and educational benefits to the local community and visitors alike. The project has the undoubted potential to revive a vital community corridor and leave a lasting legacy for future generations to enjoy.”
