Campbell celebrates 120 years of Belfast Central Library
Tuesday, 14 October 2008Arts Minister Gregory Campbell today launched a week of celebrations to mark 120 years of Belfast Central Library.
The Library is holding a series of anniversary celebration events, including behind the scenes tours, a murder mystery event and a Victorian evening to mark their official opening in October 1888.
Speaking at the launch the Minister said: “I am committed to the modernisation and improvement of library services across Northern Ireland as set out in ‘Delivering Tomorrow’s Libraries’. This is evident by the fact that my Department has secured around £138million to improve library buildings and services over the next 10 years.
“My vision is for a public library service that is flexible and responsive, provides a dynamic focal point in the community and assists people to fulfil their potential."
The Minister added: “Since 1999 eleven new replacement libraries have been opened and many others have been refurbished, improved and extended. I want to see this continue with better library services and facilities that are focused and dedicated to the changing needs of the people of Northern Ireland for future generations to come.”
Belfast Central Library has remained one of Belfast’s landmark buildings and is one of the most visited buildings in Northern Ireland. It currently houses a lending library, a music library, the Belfast Ulster and Irish Studies Department, a Fine Book collection, a Business library, a General Reference department and continues to play a major role in fulfilling the research and learning needs of the city.
The Minister concluded: “It is my pleasure to launch these events to celebrate the 120th anniversary of Belfast Central Library. This is a tremendous milestone for the Library in what is exciting times for libraries in Northern Ireland.”
