Minister wishes Northern Ireland team well for Commonwealth Games
Friday, 10 September 2010Sports Minister, Nelson McCausland this evening attended a special reception for the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games 2010 team at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast
The Commonwealth Games are taking place in Delhi, India, between 3 and 14 October 2010. Northern Ireland will be represented by over 80 participants across a range of sports from athletics to boxing.
The Minister said: "I would like to take this opportunity to convey my warmest congratulations to each member of the Northern Ireland Commonwealth team on their selection. This is a wonderful achievement brought about through their hard work and dedication. The contribution of the coaches and support staff has also been key in getting the team to this point."
The Minister continued: "The Commonwealth Games provide a unique opportunity to for our athletics to gain valuable experience of high level competition and this will be invaluable looking ahead to the London 2012 Olympic Games. Success in sport helps to inspire our young people to take up and continue in sport and this is a key element within the Northern Ireland sports strategy ‘Sport Matters’.
