Minister announces closure of St John's Primary School
Tuesday, 12 January 2010Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has approved a Development Proposal to close St John’s Primary School, Glenn, Newry.
Commenting on the decision, Ms Ruane said: “Since its opening in 1955, St John’s has provided an excellent education to children from the local community. In recent years however the school has suffered from declining enrolments with only twenty children enrolled for 2009/10. The decision has therefore been made to close the school as I am confident that the children’s educational needs can now be best met at alternative schools within the area.
“I am sure all those involved, including parents and school staff, will work hard to ensure a smooth transition for the children to their new school and I wish them all the best in the future. I would also like to pay tribute to all those connected with St John’s Primary School who, over many years, have shown their commitment and dedication to the school and its pupils.”
