Minister agrees closure of St Patrick’s Primary School, Creggan
Wednesday, 19 May 2010Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has approved a development proposal to close St Patrick’s Primary School, Creggan, in County Tyrone.
Commenting on the decision the Minister said: "It is with regret that I have agreed the closure of this small rural primary school. However, with a steady decline in enrolments over a period of several years, leading to a total enrolment of only 12 pupils in the current school year, I feel that my decision is in the best educational interests of the remaining pupils.
"There are several alternative primary schools in the area, including two primary schools within the same parish, which have sufficient capacity to offer places to these pupils and I am confident that all those involved, including parents and school staff, will work hard to ensure a smooth transition for the children.
"I would like to pay tribute to all those connected with St Patrick’s Primary School, who over many years, have shown their commitment and dedication to the school and its pupils. I wish them all well for the future."
