Education minister disappointed no talks agreement
Tuesday, 30 October 2007Following the ending of talks the Education Minister Caitríona Ruane said:
"I am extremely disappointed that it has not been possible to reach agreement, despite extended discussions.
"On 28 September an improved offer was made by the employers. An extra £15 million would ensure every classroom assistant received a one off payment.
"This is on top of the £30 million already identified for the job evaluation exercise.
"I have also initiated a review of the roles of staff in schools.
"It is estimated around half of all classroom assistants will receive back pay as a result of the job evaluation exercise, with those working in special schools benefiting most.
"The classroom assistants have waited a long time to get the money they are due and I am committed to ensuring they get a fair deal.
"I have always said I value the work of classroom assistants and over the past few weeks, I have met with many classroom assistants, and also parents of children they look after.
"The other three unions have stated their intention to continue detailed consultation with their members on the offer of 28 September.
"I would now call on NIPSA to do likewise, so every individual member knows exactly what the offer would mean for them."
