Ruane – Applauds Continued Success of Curriculum Sports Programme
Thursday, 30 October 2008Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, today took part in a practical coaching session with GAA and IFA coaches from the Department’s curriculum sports programme.
Speaking at the Meadowbank Recreation Complex in Magherafelt the Minister said: “The curriculum sports programme is continuing to grow in primary schools and is going from strength to strength. Last year 20 coaches from each Association worked with younger primary pupils in over 400 primary schools. The programme is now entering its second year and both the IFA and the GAA have demonstrated their commitment to expanding it through the recruitment of additional coaches. Today there are 28 IFA coaches and 32 GAA coaches.
“I have seen first hand the benefits for both children and teachers taking part in the programme in primary schools. The focus on developing the physical literacy skills of our youngest children through Gaelic games or soccer helps to develop their enthusiasm for sporting activities, raise their confidence and self-esteem, and can support their achievement across the curriculum. There is also a strong emphasis on boosting the confidence and enjoyment of primary teachers in teaching Physical Education.
“I have had the opportunity to meet many of the coaches and am always impressed with their enthusiasm and commitment. I would like to thank them all for their hard work and the positive effect they are having in inspiring children to get involved in sport and to be active. I would also like to thank the GAA and the IFA for their hard work and dedication to this programme, their support and encouragement have improved the lives of children across the north”
