New technology helps language development – Ruane
Monday, 19 October 2009Education Minister Caitríona Ruane has highlighted the role technology can play in the development of language.
The Minister was speaking as she launched a new web based radio project, Tonnta, for Irish-medium schools at Scoil an Droichid, Belfast.
The Minister said: “In recent years there has been a very welcome increase in the number of people of all ages choosing to learn and speak Irish. We have also seen an increased demand for places in Irish-medium schools at all levels in many areas of the north of Ireland.
“For any language to thrive and develop new technologies need to be embraced. This web based radio project, Tonnta, offers children in Irish-medium schools the opportunity to learn new skills through using the technology and developing their writing skills.
“Many children will already have experience of social networking websites. Tonnta offers the opportunity to develop an online community through Irish, within a safe environment.”
