Education Minister emphasises importance of early learning
Thursday, 22 October 2009Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane has emphasised the importance of play and leisure in children and young people’s development and learning.
Speaking during a two-day conference entitled, 'Time to Play', and hosted by Playboard, the Minister said: "As adults we must recognise that a child playing is also a child learning. Children learn through interacting with each other and exploring the world around them. By playing games, dancing, singing and telling stories our children are developing their social, emotional, literacy and numeracy skills. These are all skills they will continue to build on in the classroom and in later life.
"Through the Sure Start programme, my Department supports the development of learning for pre-school children, involving parents and raising their awareness of the importance of play in their child’s development. Once they start school, the curriculum recognises that children learn best when they are having fun and involved in challenging activities.
"For too long we have allowed the 11 plus to distort the curriculum. This has led to a rigid and formalised system which did not allow our younger children to develop naturally, by exploring the world around them and through play. Children also need a space to play, playgrounds and play areas are at the heart of all schools where they make friends and learn from their peers.
"This is why the Department’s 'Building Handbook', ensures specific space is allocated for that use. As Education Minister, I want to ensure that every child receives the best possible start, enjoying school life and taking with them the skills they need to succeed and achieve their full potential.
"I would like to pay tribute to the work Playboard is doing to ensure that we all recognise the child’s right to a happy, fulfilling childhood that enables them to have fun, play and learn."
