Over 10,000 apprentices currently in training
Wednesday, 11 February 2009Employment Minister, Sir Reg Empey, today welcomed the major uptake in apprenticeship programmes across Northern Ireland.
The new total of 10,193 people undertaking apprenticeships surpasses the Department’s target to have 10,000 apprentices in training at any one time by 2010.
The recent launch of ApprenticeshipsNI in September 2008, saw the introduction of an all-age provision and an opportunity for those working reduced hours (at least 21 hours per week) to train as apprentices.
Despite a major economic downturn in many industries, Sir Reg expressed his delight that employers all over Northern Ireland were recognising the benefits of investing in their workforce and preparing for the future. He said: “We cannot allow the current economic climate to prevent us from developing and upskilling our workforce in preparation for a brighter future. I would urge all employers, large and small, to find out more about the apprenticeships programme and consider it as a means to raise the skills level of their workforce and help lessen any potential future skills gaps.”
There are currently over 100 Apprenticeship Frameworks available across a wide and diverse range of occupational areas. To find out which one works for you visit www.apprenticeshipsni.info or telephone 0800 0854573
Notes to Editors:
- The Department, in recognition of the difficult times that employers are facing in retaining apprentices, introduced contingency arrangements from 1December 2008. These arrangements will allow any apprentices made redundant since 1September 2008 and were working in the construction, engineering and motor vehicle sectors, to continue with training. The department has engaged with Sector Skills Councils, Workforce Development Forums, and Training Suppliers to try and identify alternative employers who would be prepared to employ such apprentices who have been made redundant. If apprentices are unable to find alternative employment, the arrangements allow that they may continue their training under either Training for Success or Steps to Work.
