Minister shows support for student services
Wednesday, 22 July 2009Employment and Learning Minister, Sir Reg Empey, today praised the work of student support services in helping students reach their potential in their studies and future careers.
The Minister was speaking at the annual conference held by AMOSSHE (Association of Managers of Student Services in Higher Education), the Student Services Organisation, which was held in Belfast for the first time.
The conference brings together over 80 leaders from the UK’s 169 Universities and higher education institutions to discuss ‘Student Services: Community, Identity and Place’. Delegates to the conference will discuss key themes, including Student Services Management, Improving the Student Experience, Equality and Diversity, and International Student Affairs.
Sir Reg emphasised the importance of student services in higher education. He said: “With record numbers of students entering higher education this year, it is vital that we do all we can to help them complete their university studies. Student support services play an important role in achieving this aim. They can also enhance young people’s awareness and understanding of the community around them and provide essential support for overseas students.”
Head of Student Affairs at Queen’s University, Belfast, Helen McNeely said: “We are pleased to welcome speakers to Belfast from around the world to address the major issues affecting students, how Universities can build relationships and work with local communities. AMOSSHE aims to inform and support the leaders of student services, and to represent, advocate for and promote the student experience.”
The conference was also addressed by Dr William McDonald, author of Creating Campus Community, and Vice President for Student Life, Presbyterian College, South Carolina.
