Minister celebrates 100 years of further education

Thursday, 7 June 2007

Employment and Learning Minister, Sir Reg Empey, this evening hosted a centenary dinner in Belfast City Hall for representatives of the Further Education sector.

The Minister paid tribute to all those past and present who, through their dedication to Further Education, have made a very valuable contribution to society here over the years, including staff, students and governing bodies.

Sir Reg said: “We have a very strong Further Education sector and over the years our local colleges have provided solid foundations on which individuals build the knowledge and skills needed by employers.”

As well as marking 100 years of achievement in Further Education, the event was used as an opportunity to look ahead to the new strategic direction for the sector in Northern Ireland, through the implementation of the ‘Further Education Means Business’ strategy.

The Minister spoke of his optimism for the future of the sector and the important role it will play in providing the skills that will enable Northern Ireland to become a vibrant and forward-looking economy that can compete in the 21st century.

He said: “It is paramount that we achieve the right balance between delivering an economically relevant curriculum that meets the needs of employers whilst increasing access to those who are marginalised from society or have barriers to learning.”

From 1 August 2007, the current 16 colleges will merge to six.
