Importance of skills message is getting through – Empey

Monday, 30 November 2009

Employers are taking up the challenge of building a skilled workforce, Employment and Learning Minister, Sir Reg Empey has said.

The Minister highlighted research in the Northern Ireland Skills Monitoring Survey 2008 Report which showed that 74% of employers had organised workforce training in the previous 12 months and welcomed the progress made through the Department for Employment and Learning’s Skills Strategy, which sets out a long term vision for skills with the twin goals of social inclusion and economic success.

Commenting on the research, the Minister said: “The importance of research into our skills development cannot be overemphasised. Skills are at the very core of any vibrant economy and in order for Northern Ireland to play its part in emerging from the global economic downturn, we must create a highly-skilled and motivated workforce. My officials will analyse the report’s findings before looking at how the department’s range of training programmes can best address the needs of employers and employees alike.”

Among the key findings were that just under two thirds of difficult-to-fill vacancies were due to skill-shortages. Addressing this issue, Sir Reg said: “It is now more important than ever for employers to invest in workforce development. Companies are two and a half times more likely to survive if the business invests in staff training. It is therefore encouraging that the report shows that, whilst skill shortages remain an issue, almost three quarters of employers have acknowledged this and arranged training for their employees in the previous year.

“However, there can be no room for complacency. I urge businesses to continue to invest in high quality training aimed at meeting future skills needs. It is only through upskilling that Northern Ireland will be in a position to take best advantage of any anticipated economic upturn.”
