Titanic signature project misses shortlist
Friday, 19 October 2007The Titanic Signature Project misses out on making the final shortlist of the BIG Lottery Fund.
The decision was made at the BIG Lottery Fund Living Landmarks Committee meeting in London on Tuesday.
Commenting on the decision, Tourism Minister Nigel Dodds said: “I am disappointed that the Titanic Signature Project has not made it through to the final stage of assessment for BIG Lottery funding. I strongly believe that the project has the potential to make a major impact on improving Northern Ireland’s tourism product, however the Lottery decision leaves a large gap in the funding of the project.
“Government will now consider the implications of the Lottery decision with the project promoters Titanic Quarter Limited and Belfast Harbour Commissioners, which will include exploring the scope for bringing other funding sources into play. I would like to congratulate the Connswater Community Greenway on their success in reaching the next stage.”
Brian Ambrose, chairman of the Titanic Foundation, said: "The public reaction over the last number of months to the Titanic Signature Project has given us the determination to deliver. I see today as a setback and as such am disappointed. However, we will simply re-group and re-double our efforts and find a way to deliver this exciting project in time for the 2012 Centenary. I also would like to congratulate the Connswater Community Greenway on their success in reaching the next stage."
Mike Smith, chief executive of Titanic Quarter Limited said: “Everybody involved in the bid for Big Lottery funds is disappointed by today’s news.
“This, however, is not the end of the road - Titanic Quarter and its co-promoters Belfast Harbour Commissioners will be talking to Government about how we can progress matters in the absence of funds from the Big Lottery. Belfast has a fantastic maritime heritage – it’s a story which we believe has international appeal and which is worth telling.
“Today though is good news for the Connswater Community Greenway and we wish them every success in the final funding round.”
