Foster launches Mournes Signature Project Action Plan
Friday, 2 October 2009Tourism Minister Arlene Foster today launched the Mournes Signature Project Action Plan.
Produced by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB), the Action Plan outlines ongoing work in the area, including the Mournes Signature Project, which aims to enhance the visitor experience in and around Mourne, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Commending the work that has been carried out in the region, Tourism Minister Arlene Foster said: “It is encouraging to see the progress being made on the Mournes Signature Project, detailed in the action plan. The Mournes Signature Project aims to enhance the visitor experience in the Mournes area, a region renowned for its magnificient mountains, countryside and coast.
“Much has been achieved to date, including the regeneration of Newcastle, with its promenade makeover and the installation of the main gateway feature into the town. The town’s promenade and streetscape improvements have given a contemporary feel to the seaside resort, earning it a prestigious UK Civic Trust Award. Such developments play a vital role in welcoming visitors to Newcastle and the Mournes.”
Financial assistance of £4million has already been made available by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board to deliver tourism initiatives for the area. These include Mournes coastal driving and walking routes, development of local forest parks, off-road mountain biking trails, outdoor adventure facilities and a public art programme.
Stephen Bill, NITB Manager of the Mournes Signature Project, said: "The action plan will be issued by the NITB to local tourism businesses and key stakeholders in order to keep them abreast of proposed work in the area.
"We have also used the publication to incorporate some unique stories about the area, for example, scientists have suggested that the Mourne Mountains are probably the source for much of Ireland’s prehistoric gold. This information helps us communicate just how unique the area is, encouraging everyone to realise its tourism potential."
