Births in Northern Ireland up for fifth successive year
Monday, 31 March 2008New figures released today by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) show that 24,500 births were recorded in Northern Ireland in 2007.
With 1,200, or 5% more births here than in 2006, it is the fifth annual increase in a row, and the biggest rise since 1979.
Commenting on the statistics, a NISRA spokesperson said: “For the first time in over a decade the ‘average’ number of children born per woman is now above two. There are a number of reasons for the recent increases, including women in their thirties having more children and more women moving to Northern Ireland to live and then having children here.”
Last year’s figure of 24,500 births is higher than the record low of 21,400 births in 2002, but below levels of the 1980s, when around 27,000 births were recorded each year.
