New Chief Nursing Officer appointed

Charlotte McArdle has been appointed as the new Chief Nursing Officer for Northern Ireland.

Charlotte McArdle has been appointed as the new Chief Nursing Officer for Northern Ireland.

Ms McArdle was previously the Executive Director of Nursing and Director of Primary Care and Older People at the South Eastern HSC Trust.

She takes over from Professor Martin Bradley who retired in June 2011.

Congratulating Ms McArdle on her appointment, Health Minister Edwin Poots said: “I welcome Charlotte McArdle into her new job and I look forward to working with her on a range of important health issues which affect everyone in Northern Ireland.

“This is a key post in my Department with the Chief Nursing Officer being responsible for working across the nursing, midwifery and allied health professions to provide professional, visible and inspiring leadership to staff in these areas. This is a very challenging time for the professions in Northern Ireland and I wish Ms McArdle well in her post.”

Ms McArdle said: “I am delighted to be appointed as Northern Ireland’s new Chief Nursing Officer. I look forward to working with staff across the Department and health service to ensure that patients receive the highest quality of care and to keep key issues high on the health service agenda.

There are considerable challenges ahead for the nursing, midwifery and allied health professions but I intend to provide the necessary professional leadership, along with colleagues, to face these challenges and to ensure that our professional values, ethos and principles are celebrated and encouraged at all times.”

1. Charlotte McArdle has been Executive Director of Nursing and Director of Primary Care and Older People at the South Eastern HSC Trust since 2007. Charlotte qualified as a nurse in 1991 and worked in Beaumont Hospital Dublin before moving to Musgrave Park Hospital, Belfast in 1992. She moved to the Royal Victoria Hospital as a ward sister in 1998 and moved into senior management at the Royal Group of Hospitals in 1999. Charlotte was appointed Deputy Director of Nursing at the Royal Group in 2004 and was Acting Director of Nursing from 2006 until her appointment at the South Eastern Trust in 2007. Charlotte’s responsibilities in her current role include professional leadership for nurses and midwives and training and development.
