Statement from Health Minister on high hospital costs report
Friday, 24 August 2007Commenting on the two reviews of the outcome of investigations into high costs of hospital services at the former Royal Group and Greenpark Trusts the Minister said:
“These reports looked into the previously reported high costs at the former Royal and Greenpark Trusts which were first highlighted by Appleby five years ago.
“The findings clearly show that progress has been made over the last few years but that there is further scope for improved efficiency.
“Good government demands that we achieve the best outcomes possible from public funds. This means that we must always look to do things in a better way. My guiding principle is to put patients first and to invest in and improve frontline services, not to reduce them.
“This is a Direct Rule legacy and as the new Minister I am determined to change this. I want to see all health service resources used effectively and efficiently. My department will be working closely with the relevant commissioners and Trusts to urgently pursue issues raised by the reports and to ensure that frontline services benefit from efficiencies secured.
“The reports will also play their part in contributing to the achievement of across-the-board efficiencies arising from the Comprehensive Spending Review 2007 planning process.”
