McGimpsey commends emergency services for response to flooding
Monday, 18 August 2008Health and Public Safety Minister, Michael McGimpsey has paid tribute to the emergency services for their efforts over the weekend to help people during and after the flooding across Northern Ireland.
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service answered more than 1,100 calls on Saturday and firefighters rescued a number of people, including at the Broadway underpass in Belfast.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service also dealt with the situation, and was able to carry out its vital work despite the adverse conditions.
The minister said: “I would like to pay tribute to the efforts of the many emergency services staff who worked so hard in dealing with the flooding.
“The staff from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and Ambulance Service should be proud of their collective and individual roles in responding to the floods and for the care and support they have provided, and continue to provide, to all those affected by the deluge.”
He added: “I would like to thank each of you, on behalf of the government, my department and the local community, for the job which you carry out each day.”
