Health Minister acknowledges radiographers’ success

Wednesday, 17 February 2010

Health Minister, Michael McGimpsey, today hosted a reception to congratulate award winning radiography professionals from the Belfast and South Eastern Health and Social Care Trusts.

The radiographers have won the prestigious Society of Radiographers’ UK radiographer of the year and UK radiography team of the year awards 2009.

Speaking at the reception, the Minister said: “The greatest asset of the Health Service in Northern Ireland is its dedicated staff, who have a record of providing the highest possible standard of care for our population.

“I welcome the opportunity to host this reception in honour of the highly professional radiography staff who have succeeded in gaining these prestigious awards. It is entirely fitting that their outstanding achievements have been acknowledged and I would like to offer my congratulations to them.”

Mrs Valerie McCollum, winner of the UK radiographer of the year award, is currently responsible for a team of 14 radiographers at Belfast City Hospital. During her 30 year career, she has acquired extensive applications training over a wide range of CT machines. She has lectured and co-authored numerous learned papers and articles.

The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust’s team of paediatric radiographers, who were awarded with the UK team of the year award, were honoured for their work with young patients. The team, who provide diagnostic imaging at the Ulster Hospital and Bangor Community Hospital, created a more child-centric environment to improve children’s x-ray services.

The two awards were presented by the UK Society of Radiographers at a ceremony at the House of Commons in November 2009.
