Statement from the Minister for Health - Winter pressures at hospitals in Belfast
Thursday, 15 January 2009Health Minister, Michael McGimspey has reassured the public that hospitals are rising to the challenge of the current unprecedented pressures on their services as a result of the flu bug in the community.
Mr McGimpsey confirmed that there are real difficulties which have led to ambulances being diverted from one hospital to another.
The Minister said: “A temporary divert is in operation for all ambulances arriving at Belfast City Hospital this evening. All other hospitals in Belfast as well as the Ulster Hospital are under severe pressure but they are coping.
“I would ask people to be patient and understanding. Don’t go to hospital unless it is absolutely necessary. If you are concerned contact the out-of-hours service or your GP/Pharmacist. If you are very ill please go to a hospital – you will be treated, however you may have to wait in A&E longer than normal. Some people may not be taken at the hospital they would normally attend.”
The Minister continued: “It is possible that some routine surgery may be cancelled over the next few days – this will be frustrating but urgent operations will continue.”
Praising staff for their sterling work the Minister said: “Staff are under tremendous pressure too. They have also been hit by this Influenza A bug and, in some cases up to 25% of staff are ill. As well as working with fewer staff they are also working longer hours to cope with the increased demands.”
