Minister launches seven steps to cleanliness in care homes

As part of the drive to reduce infections across all health and social care environments, the Health Minister has extended a poster campaign for use in nursing care homes.

The poster which contains seven steps to achieving a cleaner, safer environment for patients, was produced originally for hospitals where the Ward Sister / Charge Nurse was identified as the champion of high standards of patient care and experience. The poster has been revised to make it applicable to the care home environment for residents.

Michael McGimpsey said: “The messages within the seven steps poster will provide reassurance to residents in residential and care homes that the Home Manager is the person in charge of the care environment.

“This poster contains the same messages which apply to the hospital environment, such as ensuring that all staff have the correct training in order to provide safe and effective care.

“I am committed to reducing infection rates across all care settings in Northern Ireland. I want to thank Independent Care providers for working with us to develop these steps. It is important that care homes are clean and safe for all residents.”

Speaking at the launch of the new poster, Jim McCall, Managing Director, of Four Seasons Healthcare welcomed this poster developed specifically for the Independent Sector. He said: “The care and experience of our residents is our primary concern and we welcomed this opportunity to work in partnership with our colleagues in the public sector to develop these consistent messages on infection control and cleanliness.”
