Minister acknowledges contribution of Port Health Authority
Tuesday, 7 September 2010Health Minister Michael McGimpsey has said that the Port Health Authority, like air traffic control should not be taken for granted.
This was the key message delivered by the Minister to the Association of Port Health Authorities (APHA) Annual Conference.
Presenting the Colonel Stock Memorial Address at the conference in Belfast Mr McGimpsey said: "Port health authorities are constituted with the primary objective of preventing the introduction into the country of dangerous epidemic, contagious and infectious diseases and ensuring that imported food is wholesome.
"The Association plays an important role in protecting public health through liaison with government departments and agencies, local authorities and internationally through the EU, the World Health Organisation and trade bodies.
"I believe that there is a need to recognise and understand more fully the role that the port health professionals play in ensuring the safety and control of persons and cargo entering Northern Ireland on a daily basis.
"The importance of the port health function was demonstrated clearly last year with the outbreak of the H1N1 Swine flu virus. They provided a first class service in providing information to millions of travellers visiting or returning to Northern Ireland from countries affected by the virus.
"The enormous growth of international travel by sea and air is has certainly changed the nature and scale of the risks that need to be managed.
"Protecting public health, including the health of seafarers and those who work in air travel, is a grave responsibility and certainly deserves wider recognition."
