Need to get fracking issue right - Attwood
Environment Minister Alex Attwood today highlighted that we need to get the right balance between a potential major economic boost and possible environmental damage regarding fracking.
~ Wednesday, 1 February 2012
The Minister was responding to speculation that fracking could provide enough natural gas for Northern Ireland for the next 50 years.
Alex Attwood said: “I have made it clear and do so again now that all environmental and planning requirements will be complied with in relation to fracking. To this end, I am and will be exhaustive and take all necessary steps, including:-
· reviewing all emerging studies on fracking including the USEDA 2011 report, the London Government expert panels conclusions in March 2012 and the EU working group on non-fossil energy potential, a meeting of which my officials attended on 27/01/2012 and have updated me on;
· close and growing liaison with the Dublin Government, (a including a NIEA/EPA meeting on 17/01/2012) and looking at co funding on a Dublin- Belfast border basis, further research given that the Lough Allen Basin is cross border in character;
· meeting with Tamboran senior management to confirm in full and in detail the environment and planning requirements around fracking, so that the company know the extensive procedures and evidence that apply."
“I have noted the potential for jobs and energy potential that the company has announced.
“I want to reassure people, particularly in Fermanagh, that no decisions have been taken by my Department about permitting fracking - indeed no planning applications have been received. I also confirm that all requirements on the current plans or future plans will be rigorously complied with.
“As I have outlined my officials in the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) are reviewing emerging research, studying case studies from other parts of the world and liaising with counterparts in other Environment Agencies in Britain and Ireland, and other EU countries where fracking is currently proposed or taking place.
“As this work is completed a broader evidence base will emerge which will aid more effective decision making, DOE will also ensure that high levels of public consultation are undertaken.”
