Ballygowan skip hire owner fined £13,000 for waste offences

A Ballygowan skip hire business was today fined a total of £13,000 and given suspended prison sentences at Newtownards Magistrates' Court for unauthorised waste activities.

Following an investigation by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Mr Ian Walsh (34) of Tullyhubbert Road, Ballygowan, trading as Skip-It, was found guilty of storing and disposing of a range of wastes without the necessary waste licensing authorisations at sites on the Glen Road, Newtownards, Tullyhubbert Road, Ballygowan and Comber Road, Carryduff.

The charges were brought under the of the Waste and Contaminated Land Order (Northern Ireland) 1997. Mr Walsh pleaded guilty on 12 counts under Article 4(1)a i.e.depositing controlled waste or knowingly causing or permitting controlled waste to be deposited without there being in force a waste management licence and one count under Article 44(1), i.e. failing without reasonable excuse to comply with a requirement to provide information set out in a written notice issued by the Department of the Environment.
