Minister listens to proposals on restoration of Ulster Canal

Wednesday, 26 August 2009

Environment Minister Edwin Poots today attended a meeting about a proposal to restore the Ulster Canal.

The Ulster Canal connects Lough Neagh with Lough Erne and runs for a distance of 74km from Charlemont on the River Blackwater to Wattlebridge on the River Finn in South East Fermanagh. The canal opened in 1842 and was officially abandoned in 1931. Since then the canal bed, banks and towpath have been sold off to the adjoining landowners along its course in Northern Ireland.

A proposal for the restoration of the canal, in a way that is sensitive to its built heritage features, is being prepared by the Blackwater Regional Partnership (BRP). The BRP straddles an international border and is divided between three administrative authorities of Armagh City and District, Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough and Monaghan County.

Speaking after his meeting with the BRP and the Ulster Canal Group, the Minister said: “Northern Ireland has an excellent network of canals linking the main inland waterways. They preserve details of the life, technology, design and achievements of previous generations and are an integral part of the character of our historic environment. This heritage theme is an important factor in attracting the tourists that will bring life to our future economy.”

The Minister continued: “Rather than see the Ulster Canal remain disused I believe that restoration is the best way to preserve it. However, this must be done in a way that is sensitive to the built heritage features along its route.

“There are ‘listed’ locks, bridges, aqueducts and lock-keepers cottages associated with the canal. All of the built heritage features should be respected and made a feature of the restored canal.”
