Balmoral show visitors urged to stand up for nature
Wednesday, 13 May 2009Visitors to the Balmoral Show are being urged to get involved in conservation in their local area.
Two Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) stands make a direct appeal to farmers, parents, children and other young people to do their bit to protect nature.
NIEA Chief Executive Dr Roy Ramsay explained: “Inside the Government Departments Hall, visitors can talk to NIEA staff about current and new environmental regulations.
“They can also browse the NetRegs website, which provides free, straightforward guidance on environmental regulations affecting the agricultural industry.
“Outside, behind the Arena Grandstand, the NIEA ‘Local Biodiversity – Take Action’ stand showcases the work undertaken at a local level across Northern Ireland to conserve and enhance our wonderful local biodiversity.
“This highly interactive and visual stand takes visitors on a walk through different habitats and showcases the simple actions they can take to conserve wildlife.
“NIEA supports the work of Local Biodiversity Officers in district councils, in environmental NGOs and in local businesses such as Translink.
“Local Biodiversity Officers are manning the stand along with NIEA staff and are encouraging visitors to the stand to explore various habitats and learn what they can do to encourage biodiversity regardless of where they live.”
