Wilson urges all road users to follow highway code

Thursday, 14 May 2009

Environment Minister Sammy Wilson today urged all road users to make sure they know and follow the Highway Code.

During a visit to the DOE Road Safety stand at the Balmoral Show, the Minister said: “Last year, I published a revised Highway Code for Northern Ireland.

“That is why this year my department’s road safety stand at the Balmoral Show is focusing on the Highway Code which contains the rules of the road for adults, children, pedestrians, drivers and riders.

“It is essential that everyone follows the simple rules contained in the Highway Code.

“If adhered to, they will help to keep all road users safe and contribute to a further reduction in the number road traffic casualties.”

The Minster was joined by popular cartoon character “Skooter” from the Department’s Road Safety Teaching Aid Calendar. Skooter will make guest appearances at the road safety stand during the show and will be encouraging children to enter one of the road safety competitions.

Parents and children will also be able to meet some of DOE’s Road Safety Education Officers who will answer any road safety queries they might have.
