Strabane man fined £12,500 for waste offences

A Strabane tyre dealer was today fined £12,500 (plus court costs of £112) for breaches of waste management legislation at Strabane Magistrates' Court

Mr Damian Caldwell (36) of D CTyres, Bridge Street, Strabane was found guilty and fined £5,000 and £7,500 respectively on two charges.

Officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency investigated a site at Hollyhill Road, Strabane owned by Mr Damian Caldwell on 14 May 2008. During the investigation Mr Caldwell admitted that he was aware of the waste deposited on this site. The site did not have a waste management licence/exemption to keep controlled waste on site.

Notes to editors:

1. Mr Caldwell was fined under the following Articles of The Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order:

i) £5,000 under Article 4(1)(a), i.e. depositing of controlled waste in or on land unless a waste management licence authorising the deposit is in force and the deposit is in accordance with the licence.

ii) £7,500 under Article 4(1)(b), i.e. keeping controlled waste in or on land unless a waste management licence authorising the deposit is in force and the deposit in accordance with the licence.
