The Normans are back!

For one day only, Carrickfergus will go back in time by nearly 1,000 years to when the Normans arrived on our shores.

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) is linking up with the BBC and Carrickfergus Borough Council in a unique project to bring the Norman era back to life.

This autumn, the BBC‘s Hands On History series is examining the Normans and will be broadcasting a number of programmes across television, radio and online.

As part of this season, BBC Learning has partnered with Carrickfergus Borough Council and NIEA to recreate the smells, sounds and excitement of our Norman heritage in Northern Ireland.

On Saturday 25 September, Carrickfergus Castle and town centre will be alive with Norman walks, music, cookery and characters. Visitors can join in the fun from 10.30am for an amazing free family day out Norman style. You will have the chance to make candles, marvel at the jousters, stroll along the Norman walks or eat from the conquerors’ table.

There will also be an opportunity to explore the ancient walls of Carrickfergus, discover more about past excavations in the town and to have fun with all the family - the Norman way.

BBC Radio Ulster’s Saturday Magazine will be at the heart of the merriment with chat and music. Presenter John Toal will trade his microphone for a bow and arrow to hear the mysterious tales of the Norman knights on a treasure trail around the town’s walls and will sample a feast fit for a king.

  1. The event will take place on Saturday 25 September from 10.30am – 4pm. Admittance to the Castle and all events is free of charge.
  2. Hands on History is a two year BBC Learning campaign which will cover a range of eras and themes and will support programming across BBC One, Two and Four. It has launched with the Normans.
