~ Wednesday, 6 July 2011
The Minister visited the Graffiti Removal Scheme in Brownlow, a sports programme at Clonmeen Multi-use Games Area and met a local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.
The Minister also met with local MLA Dolores Kelly.
Speaking during the visit David Ford said: “I have seen at first hand today a number of initiatives aimed at reducing crime and anti-social behaviour throughout Craigavon Borough.
“It is encouraging to see a cross section of people, from the young to the elderly, working together to make our communities better places to live, work and play.
“I have seen sports activities which divert young people from getting involved in anti-social behaviour throughout the summer months and visited a Neighbourhood Watch scheme providing re-assurance to some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
“The removal of graffiti is also an important project in Craigavon. Graffiti has a negative effect on communities – reducing pride in their surroundings and increasing the fear of crime. It is excellent to see the ongoing work to tackle this issue in the Craigavon area.”
The Department of Justice, working with Craigavon Community Safety Partnership supports a number of initiatives in Craigavon to address crime, the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour.
David Ford continued: “I commend the Craigavon Community Safety Partnership and all those involved in these initiatives for the contribution they are making towards making the local community a safer place for all. It is only by working in partnership that we can continue to reduce crime and the fear of crime.”
The Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Alan Carson says “I'm delighted to welcome the Minister here today. I know that he has been out and about seeing at first hand the work of the Community Safety Partnership. The CSP plays an important role within the community and is an invaluable resource for the people of Craigavon".
The Chair of the CSP, Cllr Robert Smith endorsed the Mayor's comments and expressed his appreciation to the Minister for the visit.
