Minister of Justice, David Ford MLA

The objectives centre round the key themes of human rights, accountability, policing with the community and policing in a peaceful society.

The Minister said they apply both to current policing while also outlining the overall future direction for policing.

Speaking as he accompanied a Neighbourhood Policing Team in East Belfast, David Ford said: “These are high level objectives which I believe cover the key issues that are relevant to policing today and in 10 years time.

“They clearly set out objectives to aim for, as well as importantly setting out a number of principles that must be upheld, such as operational independence and accountability.

“Policing has an incredibly important role to play in the future of Northern Ireland. Its transformation has helped move us forward to where we are today and these objectives recognise its continued contribution towards making Northern Ireland a more inclusive and cohesive society.”

The objectives were developed in consultation with the Police Service of Northern Ireland, the Policing Board, the Justice Committee, the wider policing family and other interested parties, through a public consultation process.

David Ford continued: “These objectives were developed in partnership.

“The positive comments and overwhelming support they received shows just how far policing has come in the past 10 years.

“I look forward to working with the Policing Board and the PSNI in the future as we see this vision being implemented.”
