Local Speed Limits

The Department for Regional Development would like to hear people's views on setting local speed limits here.

A 12 week public consultation on the draft policy document, Setting Local Speed Limits in Northern Ireland begins today.

The policy aims to:

Promote safe and considerate driving and encourage road users to adopt appropriate speeds on our roads;

Give guidance to Roads Service traffic engineers to achieve appropriate and consistent setting of local speed limits across the urban and rural road network;

Summarise the legal requirements governing the setting of local speed limits;

Introduce variable speed limits at rural schools; and

Provide for a review of speed limits on all strategic roads within five years of publication of this document
