M2 roadworks move to next stage

Friday, 29 June 2007

There will be changes to the traffic layout on the M2 in Belfast, due to a road widening and bridge replacement scheme.

Starting on Monday 2 July, a lane closure will be required on the M2 between Greencastle and Sandyknowes over the next 16 weeks to facilitate works on this section of the motorway.

This will mean reducing the country-bound carriageway of the M2 to two lanes between Greencastle and Sandyknowes.

This lane closure will mainly affect traffic using the M2 in the evening peak. Drivers should expect delays on this section of the M2 and allow extra time for their journey.

During construction Roads Service will maintain two lanes in each direction between Sandyknowes and Greencastle, however, traffic lanes will be narrower than normal and subject to a temporary 50mph speed limit.

The work on the M2 will involve:

  • Widening the Belfast-bound carriageway of the M2 to provide 3 traffic lanes between Sandyknowes and Greencastle
  • Replacing 3 bridges over the M2 (Hightown, Collin and Longlands Bridges)
  • Local widening of the M2 to provide three lanes on the country-bound carriageway over the Greencastle Interchange

Local temporary traffic arrangements will be in place to maintain access across the M2 at the Hightown, Collin and the Longlands Bridges.

Notes to Editors:

  1. This is the first phase of road works on the M2. The £20 million M2 Improvement scheme is presently programmed for completion in 2009.
