Publication of Northern Ireland Road and Rail Tranpsort Statistics October to December 2008
Thursday, 26 March 2009The latest edition of the Northern Ireland Road and Rail Transport Statistics, containing statistics for October to December 2008, is now available.
The publication is produced by the Central Statistics and Research Branch (CSRB) of the Department for Regional Development and contains information on vehicle registrations, use of public transport, deliveries of petrol and diesel for use in Northern Ireland and driver and vehicle tests. KEY POINTS
The key points for the October to December 2008 quarter are:
- There were 14,047 new and used cars registered for the first time during the quarter. 45% (6,294) were new cars.
- The number of new and used cars registered for the first time during the quarter has decreased by 22% since the corresponding quarter last year. In fact, all the 2008 quarterly figures are lower than the corresponding 2007 quarterly figures.
- Ford was the most popular make of new car during October to December 2008, accounting for 16% (978) of all new cars registered.
- Of the 510 heavy goods vehicles registered for the first time in Northern Ireland, 62% (317) were previously used vehicles.
- There were 19.36 million public bus passenger journeys made during the quarter, a weekly average of 1.49 million.
- The weekly average rail passenger journeys have increased by 5% to 0.21 million from 0.20 million since the corresponding quarter of 2007. During the same time period, weekly average rail passenger receipts rose by 16% to £0.59 million from £0.51 million.
- From October to December 2008, 226,730 tonnes of petrol and diesel were delivered for use in Northern Ireland. This represents an increase of 10% on the tonnage delivered during the corresponding quarter in 2007.
- Over the period January 2008 to December 2008, the pass rate for car ‘L’ driver tests was 50% for males and 41% for females in Northern Ireland.
