Roads Service to Invest £2million in Moyle area

Monday, 11 May 2009

Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy announced a £2million investment for the Moyle area this year.

Speaking ahead of a meeting between Roads Service and Moyle District Council, the Minister said: “As part of this investment it is proposed to resurface 1km of road on Rathlin Island at a cost of £150,000.

“Schemes which will be taken forward in the Moyle area this year include traffic calming measures at Straidbilly Primary School, Liscolman and at St. Patrick’s & St. Bridget’s Primary School, Ballycastle. Collision remedial measures, such as improved signage and lining, are also proposed for Moyarget Road.”

Mr Murphy welcomed the road maintenance schemes progressed in the Moyle area last year. He said this year's increased allocation for structural maintenance would allow a larger number of resurfacing schemes to proceed on local roads this financial year.

Road Service’s Principal Engineer, Terry Fulton, welcomed the planned investment in local transport and safety measures in the Moyle area, which includes traffic calming, collision remedial, pedestrian measures, cycling measures and safer routes to schools.

Roads Service has also been in consultation with local government representatives on matters arising from the Review of Public Administration. These included the details of functions to be transferred to local government in 2011 and the arrangements to allow the new councils to influence roads programmes.

Mr Fulton also highlighted some of the schemes that were completed in 2008/09. He said: "These include the provision of a footway from Main Street, Waterfoot, along Glenariff Road to Foriff Caravan Park, incorporating the provision of a VRS between the carriageway and the Glenariff River; traffic calming measures have been implemented at Shore Road, Cushendall; improvements to the signage and lining along the A2 Ballycastle to Waterfoot; and new school warning signs have been erected at St. Patrick’s Primary School, Waterfoot, under the Safe Routes to School Programme.”
