This funding will be matched by Strabane District Council and will be used to purchase and install new festive lighting in the Strabane town centre, which is expected to cost in the region of £120,000 in total.

Announcing the funding, Minister McCausland said: “The regeneration of Strabane continues at pace and partnership is a key driver. Strabane District Council, Strabane Town Forum and Strabane Chamber of Commerce have been working closely with the Executive to deliver a range of regeneration projects to enhance the town centre.

“The implementation of this new modern festive lighting scheme in Strabane for Christmas 2013 will significantly improve the appearance and ambiance of the area. It will boost the town at this important retail period making it a more attractive location for traders, visitors and local people alike. The new lighting will also complement existing public realm improvements and revitalisation schemes that my Department and Strabane District Council are taking forward.”

The Minister also announced further funding for Strabane revitalisation. He said: “I can also confirm an award of £65,000 by the Executive through my Department to Strabane District Council to appoint consultants to design and implement a high quality public realm scheme in the town centre. This project, which is expected to cost in the region of £2million, will focus on Abercorn Square and the surrounding streets.”

The funding was also welcomed by the Chairman of Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, who said “Strabane District Council is delighted to receive this match funding from the Department for Social Development. The festive lighting will help revitalise our town centre and make it an even more enjoyable place to visit, to shop, to eat and to be entertained. Our continued productive partnership with DSD will ensure that these connections are made in a pleasant, welcoming and facilitative environment.”

Councillor Brian McMahon, Chairman of Strabane Town Forum added: “Strabane Town Forum is a partnership between council and representatives of the local business community. The Forum warmly welcomes this funding from Council and DSD. The forum, this festive lighting scheme and the public realm improvements are the beginning of a bright new future for Strabane.”
